There was a new game I came across on steam today that caught my attention "The Day Before." I have been a DayZ player over the years so new survival games always peaks my interest. I have seen many attempts to enhance to genre and move it forward with some being more successful than others. It has spawned new genres such as battle royal, and we all know how that has taken the industry.
But as I watched the gameplay from the new announcement trailer I also felt like I was watch a mod for "The Division." Another game that I spent many a hour on in the streets of both post apocalyptic New York and Washington DC. But instead of people dying of the pandemic... this time they become zombies!! They are attracted to the sounds you make and will attack you as a mass horde if you are not careful.
The Day Before is an open-world MMO survival set in a deadly, post-pandemic America overrun by flesh-hungry infected and survivors killing each other for food, weapons, and cars. You wake up alone in a world you no longer remember, setting out to find answers and the resources to survive.
The HUD shows indicators for cold, energy, water and health. This means food and water will be key supplies in keeping your character alive and watch out for the snow storms because I assure you nobody wants to freeze to death.
The graphics presented look impressive showing a world brimming with detail as the characters walk through the streets of an abandoned city. You can see Christmas lights and music playing around the world indicating that we are in a winter setting. You can loot cars and enter buildings in search of your survival supplies.
The interior sections maintain that level of detail. Elevators will allow you to change floors on some of the cities high rises. This type of vertically traversal could bring a new interesting dynamic to exploring, escaping the zombie hordes and enemy players.
Like most survival games its important to manage your inventory. Even though the game doesn't show it off in detail we get a glimpse of it during the trailer. It looks rather simpler than some other survival games with slots for main weapon, secondary and clothing parts. It uses the familiar grid system for managing your backpack. Those supplies you find can then also be used to craft items such as bandages to restore life.
There will be safe zones in the form of survival zones where you can trade goods and cooperate with other players. This concept is used in custom DayZ servers and I believe will be a welcomed addition if done correctly.
The combat system seems to show players can die fairly quickly. The sequence in the store shows a grenade going off sending items flying from the shelves. We often see this level of physics interaction in trailers so it will be interesting to see it that translates to the final release of the game.
